Sega has confirmed that Sonic Mania will launch August 15th for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. The game can be pre-ordered on each of these platforms for $17.99.

Sonic Mania goes back to Sonic’s roots and will simply use the classic 2D side scrolling gameplay of the original games. There is no gimmick or special feature in the game. The only goal is to beat the level as fast as possible.

With that said players do have the choice between three characters. Sonic will be the fastest character, Tails will be able fly, and Knuckles can glide and climb walls. It will feature classic levels such as Green Hill Zone. There will also be new levels that aim to match the same look and feel of old levels.

Unlike recent Sonic games, Sonic Mania is not being made by Sonic Team or previous third-party developers. Headcannon and PagodaWest Games are taking up development of this title. Previously they worked mobile ports of Sonic The Hedgehog 1&2 and an unofficial high-definition remaster of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Their current work on Sonic Mania is described as a passion project that was made possible by the dedication of Sonic fans.
