Telltale Games just got done with the season finale of Guardians of the Galaxy, which launched today. The studio showing no clear warning signs of any stress it could have been under, but along with its season finale announcement, Telltale also announced they would be laying off 90 employees.

This is part of what Telltale is calling “comprehensive company restructuring.” In their press release, they stated they moving in a direction to be “more competitive as a developer and publisher of groundbreaking story-driven gaming experiences with an emphasis on high quality in the years ahead.” The studio also mentioned these layoffs would not affect any previously announced projects. Those include, The Wolf Among Us, Batman, and The Walking Dead.

CEO Pete Hawley stated that the world of gaming is shifting and Telltale needs to.. basically go with the flow. “The realities of the environment we face moving forward demand we evolve, as well, reorienting our organization with a focus on delivering fewer, better games with a smaller team.”

The studio also plans to move its internal development “over to more proven technologies that will fast-track innovation in its core products.” This change is an obvious one, after the many criticisms it has received over the years for its technologies performance.

People all over are putting up job listing for the impacted employees. Twitter is especially abuzz, with the hashtag Telltalejobs being on the trends feed. Telltales CEO Pete Hawley thanked those impacted employees today saying,  “all the contributions that these incredibly talented artists, storytellers, and more have made to the company.”
